Dear Parents and Students,
Thank you so much for my very generous class holiday gift! We will most definitely use the diapers and Target gift card once our new baby girl arrives! I will enjoy the bath scrub for some relaxing time myself:) It was so sweet of you to think of me and choose such thoughtful and useful gifts.
I am sorry that I didn't get a chance to come in this week to personally say goodbye to each of you. I was very surprised when the doctor told me on Monday morning that I needed to be done working until the baby arrives. I am currently just resting at home and am looking forward to meeting her soon.
I hope that you have a very happy holiday with your families. I promise to stay in touch and will enjoy coming back to visit in the spring. Happy New Year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Reinhart

Welcome Ms. Adams!
Dear Parents of Mrs. Reinhart’s Third Grade Class,
I am delighted to be your child’s teacher this year to support Mrs. Reinhart’s maternity leave! My name is Ms. Elizabeth Adams. I am a former fourth grade teacher at Cranbook Educational Community – Brookside School. I recently finished a second grade long-term guest teaching assignment at Schroeder Elementary. I had the pleasure of creating wonderful relationships with the students, parents, and staff during my time at both schools. I look forward to continuing that success at Bemis Elementary.
I have a baccalaureate degree in Elementary Education and Master’s degree in Reading and Language Arts from Oakland University. Go Grizzlies! I am recognized for the positive, professional, and passionate manner in which I approach my work with children. I am well-versed in the Common Core State Standards by grade level and consciously integrate Visual Thinking Routines into my lesson planning. I look forward to continuing the incredible culture of thinking that Mrs. Reinhart has clearly established in the classroom!
My twins Robert and Annabelle started middle school this year and are enjoying the next chapter in their academic careers. They are both musical leaders of the Oakland Youth Orchestra and are actively involved in sports and scouts. I am also the proud owner of a precocious and playful chocolate Labradoodle named Manny, so you can expect your child to share a “Manny story” from time to time!
I look forward to partnering with you and getting to know your child as a unique individual. I am very confident that our time together will be beneficial and rewarding. I feel fortunate to be embraced by such a warm and outstanding learning community at Bemis and look forward to the months ahead in partnership with you.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth A. Adams

Investigating Water
This week we have started our new science unit, water. We have learned a few properties of water such as water can get absorbed into a material or "bead" and stay on top of a material. Yesterday we learned about surface tension as we watched water droplets stick together on top of a penny and form a dome shape. We were able to watch surface tension break by adding just one too many drops and seeing the water spill over. Today we learned that water can travel down a slope. We conducted an experiment to see if a small drop of water would travel faster or slower than a larger drop. We concluded that larger drops traveled faster because there was more weight to push it down the slope. See some pictures of us in action today thinking like scientists!

Horray for IPads!
The third graders have finally received their iPads. So far we have learned how to use a few of their features and have talked alot about classroom rules and routines.
A few rules we have created are:
1. iPads need to go home every night so they can be charged and need to be returned to school everyday.
2. iPads and water bottles cannot be together in the backpacks. Water bottles need to be placed in an outside pocket or carried.
3. The ONLY apps kids can download at this time are ones that we download together at school. This is to save space on the devices as well as allow me to closely monitor what is on each device.
4. iPads must be carried with two hands
5. iPads are stored in our chair pockets so we always know where they are.
6. We are NOT allowed to create passcodes for our iPads because of locking issues. (District rule!)
7. We need to remember to make the very best possible choices when using our devices.
We are having a lot of fun using the iPads but we also know they are a priveledge and we need to be very responsible in order to keep them. We are off to a great start!!

They have practiced skills such as adding interesting leads, wrapping up our stories with unique endings, changing simple verbs to more specific verbs, writing clear sentences, sequencing our stories, and adding transition words so our writing is easier to understand. Today we began to share our writing with our classmates as we invited students to sit in the "Author's Chair" and read their writing. Students were complimented on their pieces by their classmates which is always fun to hear. See pictures below of your child and their published piece, also look for their pieces in their Friday folders both this week and next. Enjoy!

What we've Been Learning This week...
Reading: This week in reading, we are working on developing good reading habits. We are discussing and practicing good things readers do such as choosing just right books, increasing our stamina, and setting realistic goals. Readers should be practicing stopping while reading to clear up any confusing parts, as well as using strategies to figure out tricky words.
Writing: Students have committed to a topic for their personal narrative story that they will publish. We focused on including details and setting description to create a picture in the reader's mind. We will work on making revisions and edit our stories this week and will publish them and celebrate our work soon!
Math- We are currently studying multiplication and division in math. Students are learning multiple strategies for solving equations as well as drawing proof pictures. So far, students have learned their 2's, 3's, 5's, 9's, and 10's facts. Please continue practicing the multiplication and division facts of these at home nightly!
Science- We are half way through our measurement unit in science. Students have been conducting experiments to explore standard units of measure in the metric system. We have discussed the scientific method and will use that to practice our scientific thinking skills.
Social Studies- We will begin social studies in a few weeks.
Word Study- This week we are studying the Long O sound in words. Students need to practice their words throughout the week so that they are prepared for Friday's test.

Learning to Work as a Team
Today the third graders were charged with the mission of building the tallest free standing tower that they can in 10 minutes. They were asked to work as a team with their tablemates. They were given plastic straws and tape to use for supplies and couldn't add anything else. The teammates listened to eachothers ideas and tried to build the strongest tower that they could build. See photos below:)
After our towers were built we discussed what made a strong tower but also what made a strong TEAM. The kids came up with the following ideas:
What Makes a Good Team?
1. Each person has an idea and we combine them together to come up with our best idea.
2. We came up with a plan before we start.
3. A good team votes on the best idea so it is fair.
4. We should do one step at a time.
5. Everyone should have a job so that we don't fight.
6. We should brainstorm first and draw or show ideas so everyone understands.
7. Everyone should work together, no one can just sit there while everyone else works.
8. We should take turns.

Math
In 3rd grade, we use a math workshop model that follows our new Math Expressions curriculum. Students will be learning what this looks like and explore the various opportunities that will be available to them. Each day begins with a mini-lesson to explore the topic for the day which leads into stations. Stations provide students an individualized and small group approach to meet their individual learning needs. Groups are fluid and change pretty frequently, so don't be surprised to find yourself in a new group! As we begin the year, we will practice using our math notebook to record our thinking and wonderings. Students will also learn what a math group is and explore various activities that will be available.
