Social Studies: We finished our unit on the Northeast region. Next week, we will be studying the SOUTHEAST region and make several additional stops with a more extensive exploration of the southern part of the coast. The children will have a chance to expand their note taking skills and build on the knowledge and skills gained in our recent unit.
Reading: We spent the week analyzing different types of genres and discussing inferencing through the Making Meaning mini-lessons. We read "The Paper Bag Princess" and "Officer Buckle and Gloria" to identify character traits and make inferences based on descriptions in the text.
Writing: We are continuing with our REALISTIC FICTION stories. The children are on their first draft and are carefully skipping lines to allow for revisions and careful planning. They are learning how to use their story mountain as part of their story planning and referring to their notes and events in their plan to develop their story thoughtfully and carefully...paragraph by paragraph. Our other focus has been on showing a characters feelings and thoughts through our descriptive language. This emphasis parallels the work we did in reading this week!
Spelling: Our words for Week 20 look at the hard "g" sound. The pattern we will be studying is as follows: ge, gi, gy.
