As I mentioned at Curriculum Night, the third graders will be asked to complete one book project each month. The directions, rubric, and reading calendar will come home at the beginning of
the month. The students are asked to complete a certain amount of nightly reading. The reading should be initialed by you on the calendar and turned in with their project at the end of the month. In addition, the students need to complete the book project as well as practice presenting this project. The projects will be presented in school and through this we will practice our oral
communication skills such as eye contact, speaking with expression, speaking clearly, and speaking with a loud voice. Students may seem nervous about this initially but throughout the year these skills will really improve.
You are more than welcome to assist
with this project in terms of setting up a time line such as the timeline below:
Week #1: take a trip to the library to select a new book
to use for the project
Week # 1-2: read the book and talk with mom or dad about it
Week #3: Begin project
Week #4: Finish project and practice presentation.
Also parents can assist with the oral presentation skills by encouraging your child to present to you at home and give them tips on how to improve their presentation.
However, parents please do not complete the project for them. This might include:
1. Typing for them
2. Giving them specific things to say or write
3. Reading the book to them
I hope that this is a fun learning opportunity for all the students! I really look forward to seeing what they come up with!!
