This past week was Fire Safety Week. The children enjoyed a visit from the Troy Fire Department and we all went into the portable Smoke House with a fire fighter to learn about fire safety. We also had two fire drills at school where the children lined up quickly and quietly. We have completed the third grade word study for the year...just in time to focus our energy on M-Step testing.
Math: We are finished with our unit on Fractions. We spent the week exploring equivalent fractions using number lines and fraction bars. We also worked on solving Real-World problems using fractions. The children realized that we use fractions every day in a variety of capacities! We reviewed our study guide and will test on Monday. Our final unit is on geometry!
Science: We have been enjoying watching our seeds grow in the mini-sprouters! Hopefully, you have been following all of our great thinking and wonderings on Twitter! This week the children explored plant structures (the seed skin/coat, embryo, and cotyledon) to understand how roots are formed and plant grow. We also compared the mass of dry seeds to wet seeds using a scale and drew the conclusion that seeds absorb water, swell, get bigger, heavier, and soften so that the embryo can grow! Amazing!!
We are detailing our seeds'journey on the ipad complete with pictures, noticings, and labels.
Social Studies: We are exploring social studies parallel with our science unit. The region we are studying is the SOUTHWEST region and making stops in a BIG RIG!
Reading/Writing: We continue with our Literacy Workshop block as we write topic sentences and begin drafting paragraphs for each topic. We are using a topic sentence, adding 5 facts to each paragraph and add-ons to paint a better picture, and a conclusion. We are using the ipad for research and to further formulate their ideas about their state.
Spelling: We are finished with all of the word study groupings for the year. The children have really excelled in their word study and spelling skills!
