WOW! We have been doing a lot of celebrating at Bemis. First we had the huge honor of receiving the National Blue Ribbon award and now today we were able to celebrate Mr. Whan's awesome accomplishment of being selected as Michigan's 2015 Outstanding Principal!! We feel so lucky!!
Along with our celebrations, we have been learning a lot in room 12 as well. Read on to find out what we have been doing in each subject.
Reading: we have wrapped up our character unit and now have joined book clubs as we dive into the mystery genre. Each book club consists of 3-5 members who are reading the same story. Each day the group reads assigned pages in their books and then engage in book conversations that are centered around the lesson that we discussed in our mini lesson as a class. Topics such as character analysis, uncovering clues, identifying suspects, and watching out for red herrings are all things that we will learn and discuss this unit. The readers seem to be really enjoying this new style of reader's workshop.
Writing: we are finishing up with our conferences with Mrs. Reinhart where we are discussing our abilities to write personal narratives. After our conference, we are publishing these stories and then will share them towards the middle of the week. We hope to send our published stories home to you by the end of the week. We have done a GREAT job on these stories:)
Spelling: This week we are learning about double consonant blends. A blend is when two letters come together to make a new sound. The blends we are focusing on this week are pr, pl, sh, and th.
Science: We just started our new unit on water. During this unit we will learn about the properties of water, the importance of water on earth, the water cycle, and water usage.
Math: We have just started unit 3 which has a focus on measurement. We have a head start in this unit since we have developed knowledge on the topic of measurement in our earlier science unit. This unit will allow us to closely compare the US system of measurement and the metric system of measurement. We will be measuring length, capacity, weight, and time.
