Our River Rouge Factory Tour was a huge success and a great way to start our first full week after the break! Music has kept us busy as we practice with grade level rehearsals two mornings this week. The children worked very hard and sound just great!
Math: We are finishing up Unit 5 in mathematics which closely examined methods for solving two step story problems and finding and labeling the missing information using a variable. Last week, the children learned a number of strategies to solve two step problems. This week, they had to select the best strategy to solve the problem and write an equation to demonstrate their thinking. Our math test will be next Tuesday.
Reading: We spent the week studying different graphic organizers to help us organize our thinking when reading non-fiction text. We read a complex passage about cheetahs followed by an examination of several familiar graphic organizers from our unit. We debated the merits of each for helping us organize our thinking and non-fiction details. We continue to build our reading stamina daily through IDR time. We will continue this work next week.
Writing: We will be finishing our non-fiction "book" writing this month. We are pulling the pieces together as we revise our work for word choice, logical sequencing, and punctuation and publish our pieces using the Keynote app on our ipads. The children look forward to continuing to share their work with each other and adding details!
Science: We have completed our unit on Light and Heat and spent the week with our last experiment looking at ice and heat energy. Our main focus was looking at the BIG IDEAS from the unit and bridging our understanding from what we knew at the beginning of the unit about this topic, to what we know now. It was really exciting to see all of the new understandings as we shared and made connections to each other! We will move back to Social Studies with an exploration of the MIDWEST.
Spelling: Our next group of words will move us to PREFIXES, after several weeks of suffix word work. Keep up the great effort on the Tic-Tac-Toe assignment!
