Math: We worked hard at adding and subtracting three digit numbers while regrouping and ungrouping. We saw that we could ungroup in subtraction from the left or the right and still get the same answer. We polished our proof drawings and peer modeled for each other. We also looked at the relationship between addition and subtraction and concluded that understanding this relationship about members of the same fact family or math mountain can help us solve problems quickly...and check our answers to see if they are correct! We will be having a unit test on Thursday.
Reading: We analyzed the story Boundless Grace while exploring the theme of the book: "Family is what you make it!" We looked at how the theme about family and different kinds of families was woven into the text as we studied the theme and meaning behind it. We also used the same text to study problems and solutions in a story and the cause and effect relationship. For example, the main character, Grace, wanted the perfect family. Her parents were no longer together and her father lived in Africa and this was the problem in the story. Her father sends her money for a ticket to Africa. This caused her to explore and resolve her feelings about family and develop her relationship with her father. As a result, she realized that no family is perfect and that indeed, family is what you make it!
Writing: Wow! We have been working so hard on our drafts and revising and peer editing. The children have written some incredible stories with great detail and have been begging to write. Many are publishing with final published pieces completed in the coming week! We will be moving on to Informational writing as you can see from our March Book-It!
Social Studies: The SOUTHEAST unit wrapped up with a look at the Civil Rights Memorial in Alabama. We used the Visible Thinking Routine Headlines with our thinking partners this week to show off the BIG IDEAS we learned from this unit. Check out the tweet for a snap shot of the children admiring their work! Our unit test is this Thursday. We will be moving on to Light and Heat in Science.
Spelling: Word work with this past week with the ce, ci, and cy pattern has shown an improvement in spelling in daily writing.
Cursive: The children downloaded a new app for cursive writing. They are so excited and feel "grown up!" We will start paper and pencil cursive practice on Monday!
